Rockin’ Robins

WASHINGTON, NC — Back on August 27, a flock of Robins appeared in our yard. One or two played in the birdbath. But, more than a dozen bellied down in the sand of the yard. They struck bizarre poses which they held for minutes. There was little fluttering I expect from dirt baths. The best guess I have is that they were anting — letting ants crawl between their feathers and carry off lice and bits of dead skin. It is said to be soothing for birds, especially when they are molting. Click any photo to enlarge it.
