Downtown tower

ENFIELD, NC — The old control tower still stands in the middle of Enfield. This shot was made around sunset in 1997.

The crossing signals and tower, installed around 1940, provided both automatic and manual control of the new crossing lights and gates in the middle of town. The improved crossing guards allowed Atlantic Coast Line to raise the speed limit through town from 15 to 45 mph for the 26 passenger and 18 freight trains that passed through the town each day.
