Pamlico River Trestle

WASHINGTON, NC — The trestle here in Washington is more than 100 years old. It wasn’t so many years ago that it was operated by a single man pushing a turnstile. It is motorized now, but still requires an operator to walk out to the control shed to open and close it for Carolina Coastal’s Train 119 that crosses twice every day. I took this photo yesterday morning as the operator left to meet the train in Pinetown and change his job to enginer.
