Straight line fever
WASHINGTON, NC —We’ve seen many turtles paddle back and forth and up and down in the creek. But, Kitty and I were wondering if this turtle was okay when we saw him swimming across Tranters Creek. We were surprised when the telephoto revealed that it was a box turtle, an amphibian usually restricted to dry land. This guy fought a solid current, setting the straightest line he could to the northern shore. He took a break on a water lily pad and then headed for the hummocks and knees and stumps of our swamp where he climbed laboriously up and toward drier land. Click any pics to enlarge.
