These are older photos of life on the water I’ve taken over the years. Click any photo to fit it to your screen.

January 1995 - BELHAVEN NC — Is it possible for a place to have gotten richer and poorer at the same time?

May 1990 - ENGELHARD NC — Times change.

June 1986 - SWANQUARTER NC — The harbor at Swanquarter more than 30 years ago — the same only different.

May 1990 - ENGELHARD NC — I think this is Engelhard. Correction please if not.

August 1989 - BELHAVEN NC — Another view of Shoemaker Creek when it was thriving. There was a seafood company, active wharfs, an busy boat ramp, and a hospital there on Pantego Creek. Times change.

February 1986 - WASHINGTON NC — Hugh Martin Sterling lived on Main Street pretty much his entire life. As long as I knew him, he tended a few pots and nets in near his home on the river. Here he is one foggy February morning tending his equipment with two companions.

May 1990 - ENGELHARD NC — A quiet moment on the wharf in Engelhard as a fishing boat passes two relaxing dock workers.

March 1986 - AURORA NC — I know none of the story of this old derelict. I only remember it from the creek that runs beside the road leading to Aurora’s public boat ramp. I’d be happy to learn about it.

June 1986 - SWAN QUARTER NC — Pride in ownership means attention to details. A coat of paint and touching up of hardware adds to its life and shows professionalism. This view of the Little Sammie is from the wharf in Swanquarter. According to Charlie Jones, “I would say Johnny Ward on the outrigger and Johnny Flowers on the dock.”

August 1986 - PAMLICO BEACH NC — A shark always gets the attention of a water centered community. This large shark was caught in a trawler’s net in the Pamlico Sound. These neighbors were at the dock to marvel at the icon. A couple of the younger ones were willing to pose with the catch.

August 1989 - BELHAVEN NC — The little creek that leads to Belhaven’s City Hall once was thriving with activity. There was a seafood company, active wharfs, an busy boat ramp, and a hospital there on Pantego Creek. Times change.

May 1990 - ENGELHARD — Fishing boats and silos on Far Creek harbor in Hyde County.
