WILSON, NC — Vollis Simpson was from Lucama. He was a farmer and a house-mover. But the world came to know him as an artist. He built whirligigs — extravagant windmills with no job to do. He built and erected them in a wooded field by his shop near Lucama . It became known as Acid Park. His fame spread, and his work was called “art.” After his death in 2013, a movement began to move his works to a park in Wilson, NC where they could be maintained and protected. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park opened in 2017. I took these photos November 30, 2017.
